Day at the Track
Day at the track
with Mike Driver Motorsport
By Russell Camp, Auto One Morrinsville
It was awesome weather on the 8th October when I was invited out to
Patetonga raceway to meet the Mike Driver motorsport team. What an
adventure! And the track was laid out really well.
I met Mike, Tania and the team and was told all about the SR20DE Nissan
motor in the F2 championship Midget stockcar. It was laid on about a 45deg lean & running 16.5 –1 compression and on methanol fuel.
First things first - would a 6ft3 lanky legged guy fit in a midget stockcar - yep
I squeezed in but only just. I was given the run down on start /stop, had some overalls thrown on and then it was my chance to drive the little weapon.
With folded up limbs, i headed out onto the cool Patetonga track which had just been soaked with the water tanker. Bloody slippery and the power was
unbelievable (260hp at the wheels). The whole 10 laps, I couldn’t stop smiling, what an awesome ride! Felt like I was going so fast but apparently not—it was considered a warm up lap at 4secs slower than Mike.
Thanks Mike & Tania for laying on an awesome day, especially for fuelling my stomach as well. Pity that the day had to end early with a mechanical failure but hey that’s motor racing isn’t it !
